Caveat Lector

This post starts off on a sad note. Today was the final day fans, friends, and family members
alike were able to pay there final respects to Steve McNair. McNair was murdered by an acquaintance early Saturday morning at his Nashville apartment. There was a line stretching as far as the eye could see outside Mt. Zion church early thursday morning, where McNair has been attending services since he moved to Nashville in 1997. Fans will remember Steve as a great quarterback, and friends and family will remember him as a man who performed well on the field, and was a giving, caring man off the field. You will be missed Steve, by all of us.

On a lighter note, lets move on to baseball. Just one note here, Shane Victorino and Brandon Inge were chosen by the fans as the last two players to be voted into the 2009 MLB All-Star game. Congratulations to Shane and Brandon and good luck into the All-Star Game. Hopefully we finish this one. (See 2002 All-Star Game, 2-2 tie, 11 innings)

Moving onto the NHL.......and KHL

Detroit Red Wing forward Jiri Hudler has decided to bolt to Russia to play in the KHL for the Dynamo. Hudler signed a 2 year deal believed to be worth between 3 and 5 million dollars a year. This is a route many players have chosen mainily becasue of the fact that the money they make is untaxed and they clear every penny of the contract. This move could mean trouble for the Red Wings. This offseason they have lost a 50 goal scorer in Hossa, a speedy scoring winger in Hudler, and a proven defensemen in Chelios. Unless Detroit makes a move to aquire someone, anyone this offseason, dont expect them to win the division next year. They are in a tough divison with young talent. Nashville has always given the Wings trouble, and St. Louis is a very young talented team that works a power play with 5 forwards. Not to mention the Chicago Blackhawks who pushed the the Wings to an overtime in a fifth game of the Western Conference Finals. The Hawks are loaded with talent and managed to grab Hossa and sign him to a 12 year contract. Look for Blackhawks/Penguins to be a great rival for many, many years.

It Pays to be # 1
Today, the Los Angeles Clippers signed there number 1 overall pick, Blake Griffin. The deal is believed to be for 6 years, and could top 70 million dollars with incentives. This is a perfect time to show my disgust with the NFL and NBA. When you draft someone #1, no doubt, they are good. They are NOT worth 70 million dollars when you dont know how they will perform in the big leagues. Maybe both of your leagues should take a look at the NHL and MLB. The NHL signs players to entry-level contracts, worth an average of 800,00 dollars, and if they do good, they cash in. The MLB does the same with there players in the minors, until they are ready. With an economy in recession, and people struggling to get by, it's time for the big spending on unproven players to stop.
